Towing cars is not like ordering a pizza for delivery. Your favorite delivery guy only goes so far and provides one service.... Pizza delivery.
Towing a car requires knowing the type of vehicle that needs towed, what is wrong with the vehicle, where exactly the car is, and where it needs to go. All of these factors can change the price of a tow majorly or not at all, in some instances, Shocker Towing has a minimum charge, even if your car is only being towed .1 miles or 10 miles. The price begins to change once the vehicle needs towed over 10 miles due to the high cost of fuel and equipment.
Unfortunately, the price of a new tow truck ranges from $70,000-$190,000 (light duty). With the crazy high prices of tow trucks, they do not sit still long. Most of the time if you are broken down today on your lunch break, so are 25 other people. Some days it is slow, and trucks are at the office being washed, but most of the time if you call a tow truck and they offer a 45-minute arrival time or better that is pretty good. If you think $190,000 is a lot for a tow truck, some of the tow trucks needed to haul semi-trucks (18 wheelers) cost a company 1.4 MILLION dollars (CENTURY M100 ROTATOR)!!
NO! NO! NO!
Never offer to or put your car in neutral for the tow truck driver! This question is asked by most costumers before the tow truck is hooked up to your vehicle. If a car is put into neutral before it is secured to the tow truck, there is a high probability that your vehicle will roll away or even worse run over you or the tow truck driver and can kill someone. Basically, you are releasing a 2500lb uncontrollable missile.
The best thing you can do to help all tow truck drivers is greet them as happy as you can (it's been a bad day and we understand this), hand the driver your vehicle keys and if you have a ride say have a good day and leave. The less people on the side of the road the safer it is for you, the tow truck driver, and cars passing by.
If you are riding with the tow truck driver, after handing over your keys, step back 20 feet or more from your vehicle and away from the road. Some drivers prefer you get in their tow truck and put your seatbelt on. The tow truck driver will tell you what they prefer.
Following what you have just read is the best thing possible. We are there to get you and your vehicle off the road and the road free of cars as fast and as safe as possible. With this info you are making the driver's life a lot better because you are removing 1 more person from the danger zone.
